New Haven Police Make Arrest in April Hit and Run that Severely Injured 14-year-old

(6/4/2010) NEW HAVEN)— New Haven Police arrested 24-year-old Marquis Morrison today for charges related to the hit and run incident that severely injured a 14-year-old girl on April 30 of this year. Having graduated from the New Haven Police Academy on April 1st of this year, Morrison has been an officer-in-training in the Department’s Field Training Program for the last several months. However, Morrison has been on unpaid medical leave since the date of the incident.

The incident occurred on North Frontage Road and Sherman Street on the evening of April 30th where 14-year-old- Niije Kelly of New Haven was struck by a motor-cycle. Kelly was hospitalized with severe injuries.

“Our officers working on this case: Sgt. Rose Turney and Officer James Evarts, supervised by Lt. Petisia Adger, did a commendable job throughout this investigation. Together with the State’s Attorney’s Office, the team was able to gather sufficient evidence to arrive at Morrison’s arrest,” said Chief Frank Limon. “This arrest should send a message to the community that we will hold all of the members of our department completely accountable.”

Morrison has been placed on administrative duty pending termination proceedings before the Board of Police Commissioners. Morrison was charged with: Felony evading responsibility, reckless driving, operating a motorcycle without a license, operating a motor vehicle without minimum insurance, operating an unregistered motor vehicle, reckless endangerment in the first degree, interfering with police and tampering or fabricating evidence.
